Jim Rogers: Gold is in long term bull market

I've been quite vocal that gold would go down and stay down for a while during this bull market, maybe even under $1,000 dollars per ounce. But still the overall correction I got wrong.

My view, rightly or wrongly, is that this is a correction in a bull market.

You will remember in the bull market in stocks between 1980 and the end of the century, we had some very serious corrections. And every time people said the bull market was over, it wasn't. It ended in a bubble. My view is that's what's going to happen with commodities. We're in a correction, a serious one, but that it will turn around.

Canada vs USA on asset protection

Canada has shown great resistance to the U.S. many times in history. I know Europeans who won’t keep their money or their assets in the U.S., they’ll only keep it in Canada, their North American assets, and that’s because during the Second World War, the U.S. confiscated everybody’s assets, including our allies.

The Canadians did not confiscate anybody’s assets, including the enemies. So Canada has a long history of being much more neutral, if you will, about peoples’ money and assets. It’s certainly better than the U.S., that’s for sure.

Russian sanctions are unfair

The sanctions are unjust and an injustice. Russia should not have been affected by sanctions at all because it was America that started that coup and then turned around and blamed it on Russia.

It is forcing Russia and Asia closer and closer together, which is going to hurt America and Europe in the long term. It is going to be good for Russia and for Asia.

If these measures [arms withdrawal from Ukraine] continue in a positive way, then the sanctions may be lifted fairly soon. And if that happens, I assure you the stock market is going to go up a lot. And the ruble will go up.

If somebody wants to make a lot of money, something like the ruble may be the way to go because it is down so much. And if things do get better, which I expect, the ruble may very well rally.

I know the Germans want to lift sanctions, I know the French want to lift sanctions. Will I increase my investment [in Russia]? Yes. I am investing now, and have been [investing].

People have to make their own decisions. I make many mistakes, I do not know if I am right or wrong, but I am investing in Russia now.

Politicians change rules when they don't like something

Well if I were a municipality, I’d be borrowing as much as I could, since its interest free. You could put it into an arbitrage, if nothing else.

Why doesn’t Toronto [Canada], just borrow a lot of money, turn around and put it in government bonds? I don’t know, I suspect somewhere along the line, the Canadian politicians are going to change the rules. That’s the trick that politicians have done throughout history when things really go against the politicians, they just change the rules on you, in nearly every country in the world at some time in history.

Jim Rogers on Japan vs North/South Korea

If North and South Korea unite, Japan will be faced with a huge new competitor, much more powerful a competitor than South Korea is right now. There will be a country of seventy-five to eighty million people right on the Chinese border, with lots of cheap, disciplined labor and natural resources in the north and lots of capital, expertise, and management capabilities in the south. Such a country would run circles around Japan. The cost of doing business in Japan is high and getting higher. Among other things, the Japanese do not have a lot of cheap labor anymore.

Jim Rogers top currency for asset portfolio

I’ll tell you, my top three [currencies] at the moment are the U.S. dollar, the Chinese renminbi, and the Hong Kong dollar. Those are the ones I own the most, Hong Kong dollar of course is tied to the U.S. dollar at the moment. The Canadian dollar, I own some Canadian dollars. Canada has been a sounder country than the U.S. for the past 30 years say. No, not 30 years, past 20 years that Canada’s been run more on a sounder basis than the U.S. So I still own some Canadian dollars. They’re certainly down in the last two or three years against the U.S. dollar for a variety of reasons, but I still own Canadian dollars.

Keeping assets safe from ......

North Korea is probably a very safe country to keep your assets if you’re trying to protect it from the U.S. and the West, I’m not so sure it’s safe for protecting it from the North Koreans if they get angry at you. It depends on who you’re trying to escape. I guess places like… Well that’s a tough one, because if you’re trying to protect it from everybody, you’re going to have to find yourself in an obscure country that nobody’s angry with, and which respects the rule of law and the sanctity of private property.

I live in Singapore and I have assets in Singapore, but I have assets in various countries around the world. I have assets in U.K., some in the U.S. Trying to get my assets out of the U.S., because I expect exchange controls eventually. Switzerland, Austria, I mean these are countries that traditionally have been okay, but even these countries, especially Switzerland is not what it used to be as far as sanctity anymore. Singapore is the answer that pops to mind most of all for many reasons. The problem with that is, if the U.S. really comes after somebody, Singapore would probably cave to the U.S., depending on the circumstances.

History can help us be a better investor

Understand history. Go back and read about previous markets, bull and bear, read about the '20s and the '30s. Read about the Panic of 1907. Read about all this stuff because it's exactly the same!

One reason, other than the fact that I grew up in the backwoods of Alabama, that I could recognize bubbles is because I had read about them. I realized, 'Oh my God, they said the same thing in the '20s!' They said the same thing in previous bull markets, no matter where it was. 'This time it's different.' They're always talking about this new technology, or new genius or new methods. Just go back and read market history, economic history — history. I tell kids all the time that they should study history if they want to be successful at just about anything, because it has all happened before.

Mark Twain said it rhymes, well, it does, if you understand history, all the big forces. I don't mean when the First World War started, but if you understand why the First World War started, the real reasons, not because somebody was assassinated. If you can understand the real workings of previous times, you're going to be much better able to understand our time because it's the same stuff. We're all the same people! We haven't changed. We still put our trousers on one leg at a time.
